Here’s what you should know aboutmushrooms that growon trees and the types to look for.

These fungi feed on injured, decomposing, and dead wood.

It grows on decomposing or dead wood.

Chicken of the woods (Laetiporus sulphureus) is another polypore fungus.

Oyster mushrooms grow in clusters in a fan- or ear-like shape with gills and white spores.

They grow on dying or dead deciduous trees.

Jelly fungi vary in color and can be brown, rose, white, orange, or black.

One cause is stress brought on by conditions like extended drought, compacted soil, and overlywet soil.

Healthy, vigorous trees are less prone to infection, just like people.

Then there’s physical damage.

If you have sharp eyes, you’ll also notice thick plastic straps encircling the base of the trunk.

These straps hold the root ball together when planting a balled-and-burlapped tree.

In this case, they weren’t.

Roots died, and the turkey tails appeared.

Once this happens, you could’t save the tree.

Eventually, they’ll hollow out the tree, making it prone to falling in high wind.

The best thing to do is remove the tree before it falls on you.

Some mushrooms are very tough, may cause stomach upset, or are poisonous.

Many lookalikes are poisonous.

Oyster mushrooms grow on poplars and aspens.

These are called saprophytes.
