Let’s start with why you should prune in the first place.

In short, it removes dead and weak growth and makes room for big, healthy blooms.

Pruning can also help control the size and shape of your plants.

Is It Too Late To Prune Roses?

Depending on your rose and where you live, you just may be in luck.

Just be sure not to prune too early, before the final frost.

Should You Prune in Spring or Summer?

If you decide to break out the shears, here’s what to do.

Assess what jot down of rose you’re working with.

Some old-fashioned roses dont require heavy pruning, and some dont like it at all.

Removing any remaining foliage can help prevent disease.

Cut just above a bud so that a flush of growth will screen the stubs.

If in doubt, let it grow until you’re able to really tell.

Pruning improves air circulation and removes dead and diseased canes, which can spread disease.

After cutting, new roses will take about six weeks to appear.

If roses havent begun bud break yet, when new shoots emerge, its too early to prune them.

Doing so will encourage the plant to bud early and put any new growth in danger during cold snaps.
