What Is Ironstone?

The name is derived from the fact that ironstone is quite heavy duty and has an iron-like strength.

Ironstone is generally white or off-white but sometimes features colorful patterned designs.

Parsons has found ways to incorporate ironstone pieces into her space so that theyre both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

She has transformed an ironstone pot into her bathroom wastebasket and uses ironstone dishes daily.

Im always amazed that it has survived over a century without any cracks or chips.

Parsons says that her most prized finds are her ironstone cake stands.

They are rare to find for sale and can be very pricey when they do surface, she says.

Avoid soaking vintage ironstone for any extended period, Parsons says.

Prolonged exposure to water can possibly damage the glaze.

Do not put antique ironstone in the microwave or oven, either.

Most of my antique pieces are strictly decorative for this reason.
