The Alabama native went from biology major to music major and the rest is history.

I didnt have a plan.

I literally applied to one school.

That couldnt have been further from my calling, he said.

I just fell in love with this teacher, Mr. DeVan, he recalled.

And he said yes.

That was a life changing conversation.

You never know when one of those is going to pop up.

DeVan wasnt the only connection Hayes made within the staff at BSC.

The cafeteria was incredible.

I remember the cafeteria ladies would help me out, just let me slide in and get some food.

There was this lady named Queenie and she was incredible.

She was so sweet to the both of us.

He went on to describe his go-to spot in the cafeteria.

There was this place called the Grill.

Past midnight it became a make-it-however-you-order-itbreakfast place.

That was my go-to meal at night.

I bet you I visited that place every night between Wednesday and Sunday.

In Mobile, Hayes attended the same small school from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.

I guess people would have said I was a jock.

And then in college I just discovered other people who really loved music…

It was a group of kindred souls.

He also reflected on how the city of Birmingham was a melting pot of college students.

you could attend UAB, Montevallo, Samford, [or] Birmingham Southern.

All of these schools can intermingle in so many places and at so many events.

There are so many students but its not just one university or one college.

I always thought that was cool.
