In Spanish, the word lajitas means little flat rocks.
The town has a colorful history.

In 2000, the entire town and surrounding 25,000 acres, was sold at auction.
An Austin developer bought it to turn it into a high-end resort.
When the project ran out of money in 2007, a group of investors bought it.

Here is everything you should probably plan your trip.
The first 1.5 miles lead across mostly flat desert before climbing up a steep, rocky ravine.
At the top, the main trail dips down and continues straight.

To reach the overlook, look for a faded path that climbs the hill to the right.
From there, look south.
Youll see a curve of the Rio Grandeand beyond that, Mexicofar below.

Theres even a bathroom.
Every shot comes with a mountain backdrop.
Dont miss Amigo Yates, whose horn spread measured a whopping 8 feet, 9.5 inches.
Bring water; watch for snakes.
Best of all, pick up a made-to-order deli sandwich from the lunch counter.
Some graves are just mounds of stacked rocks; others are marked by elaborate iron crosses.
Most of the roughly 140 graves date to before 1950.
The RV park features full hookups, showers, laundry facilities, and a seasonal swimming pool.
