These are really classic Southern green beans.
These were certainly tender at 45 minutes just not to the degree that most people would like them.
If you prefer them tender crisp, take them off around 25 or 30 minutes.

Using a slotted spoon, transfer bacon to a paper towel-lined plate, reserving drippings in Dutch oven.
Add garlic and crushed red pepper, and cook, stirring constantly, until fragrant, about 1 minute.
Remove and discard bay leaf and thyme sprigs.
