Cake:

Baking spray with flour

1cupgranulated sugar

1/2cup(4 oz.

)unsalted butter, at room temperature

2largeeggs

2 1/2tsp.vanilla extract

2cups(about 8 1/2 oz.

)all-purpose flour

1 1/2tsp.baking powder

1/2tsp.kosher salt

3/4cupwhole milk

1/4cupcanola oil

Buttercream:

1cup(8 oz.

)unsalted butter, at room temperature

4cups(about 16 oz.

Lightly coat 2 (6-inch) round cake pans with baking spray.

Line pan bottoms with parchment paper, and set aside.

Add vanilla, beating on low speed until just combined.

Finish Cake batter:

Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl.

Combine milk and oil in a liquid measuring cup.

Let Cakes cool in pans on wire racks until room temperature, about 30 minutes.

Increase speed to high, and beat until fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes.

Trim Cakes:

Remove Cake layers from pans, discarding parchment linings.

Spread about 1 cup of Buttercream evenly to edges of Cake using an offset spatula.

Top with second Cake layer, trimmed side down.

Spread a thin layer of Buttercream (about 1/2 cup) over top and sides of Cake.

Chill, uncovered, until Buttercream is cool to the touch, about 15 minutes.
