Botanically speaking, they’re avariety of muscadine grapethat goes by the scientific nameVitis rotundifolia.

A ‘Scuppernong’ is actually a specific selection of muscadine."

Where Do Scuppernongs Come From?

Scuppernongs are named after North Carolina’s Scuppernong River, which is located just offAlbermarle Sound.

That’s where the grapes were originally found growing wild, then identified and cultivated during the 18th century.

That’s where we get scuppernongs.

Found at many wineries throughout the South, scuppernong wine has a wild, musky flavor.

In the kitchen, scuppernongs can also be used to makejams, jellies, and preserves.

Ask anyone: They’re something like minor celebrities down South.

The grapes are even mentioned a few times in Harper Lee’s1960 novel,To Kill a Mockingbird.
