Each of these details were scrupulously planned by Carter himself.

Another distinguished participant was President Carters pastor, Tony Lowden.

He was all about serving this nation all the way to the end.

Every time I would go visit him he would ask me four questions.

Where have you been?

What have you done?

Who have you helped?

And how can I help you help them?

Lowden recalled visiting him immediately after the accident.

He said, Listen Tony.

Hospitals are just like prisons.

Theyre easy to get into and hard to get out.

He had a black eye and he was determined to get to Tennessee to keep his word.

He did the same thing when he was governor of Georgia.

And he did the same thing when he was president of the United States.

I no longer look at life the way that I used to.

I look at it as my life belongs to our nation and this world to serve.

And I hope that today is not just a celebration but our nation, we pick up the mantle.

We pick up the legacy of Jimmy Carter and we take it to the next level.
