This is because most plants struggle to survive with their roots sitting in water.
But despite this advice, garden centers frequently carry pots that have no drainage holes at all.
This raises the question: Is potting plants in containers without drainage holes ever okay?

We have a few solutions for using pots without drainage holes for indoor and outdoor plants.
Ifwater collectsat the bottom of the pot, the roots will suffer and begin to rot.
You’ll know once the damage has already occurred and leaves begin to yellow and drop.
Eventually, the plant may collapse because the rotting roots can no longer absorb water.
Fortunately, we have a few solutions for using pots without drainage holes.
Pots will flood when the rain can’t drain out and drown the roots.
However, some outdoor plants will do fine sitting in standing water, at least on occasion.
Below, we’ve listed some bog plants and other plants that may dowell in wet soil.
Others need dryer soil, like succulents, or plenty of air around the roots, like orchids.
This reduces the likelihood that water will become trapped at the bottom, where it will never dry out.
