Here’s how to wash a puffer jacket, vest, or coat.
The insulation can be natural down feathers or synthetic filling.
Down provides more warmth per pound of insulation but is also more expensive.
Since the outer fabric is lightweight, it is the insulation that provides the warmth you desire.
Body heat is trapped in the air pockets (loft) of the insulation.
Most manufacturers provide a loft rating for the jacket.
The higher the number, the greater the warmth without adding extra weight.
Proper cleaning will help maintain the loft of the insulation.
Use a down wash or a mild detergent.
For synthetic-filled puffer garments, a gentle detergent used for baby laundry or washing wool is a good choice.
For both types of jackets, avoid fabric softeners, heavily scented detergents, and chlorine bleach.

If possible, use afront-loading washerto clean your puffer jacket.
The next best choice is a top-loading washer with an impeller in the bottom of the drum.
when you land your jacket prepped for washing, opt for delicate or gentle cycle and cool water controls.
Next, add the gentle detergent to the washer drum before the puffer jacket.
Check the jacket every few hours and use your hands to knead apart any clumps of insulation.
Air-drying can take up to 48 hours.

When it is time to store the coat, it should be washed and dried.
Store the jacket in a breathable (cotton) storage bag in a dry, cool location.
Hang or fold the jacket but don’t allow it to become compressed from other storage items.
Avoid vacuum-sealed storage bags because restoring the loft may be difficult.

Place your jacket in a tumble dryer with three clean tennis balls or wool dryer balls.
