About This Episode
A reader has a question on planting hostas in the garden.
Plus, the plant of the week.
We used to have Mondo grass in the bed too, but we ignored it and it died.

Do Hostas have a chance?
If not, what does?"
- Carter
Answer:I agree with the landscaper.

‘Cause that bed is just too small.
And one thing thatHostasdo not like is root competition.
So my advice is, replant underneath it with a shallow rooted ground cover like your Mondo grass.
Plant Of The Week
Firewitch Dianthus.
Now there’s a lot of goodperennialDianthusplants out there.
Another name for them you might know is pinks, and they’re in garden centers now.
But in my overbearing opinion, the one called Firewitch deserves to be the top of the list.
Firewitch has fragrant, hot pink blossoms, just like Nellah does, fromspring to mid-summer.
and it has this ice blue needle-like foliage that stays evergreen in all butthe coldest climates.
It grows only 10 to 12 inches high and somewhat wider, and it makes a good edging plant.
It’s good for massing, it’s good for rock gardens.
Pollinators like it, the deer don’t.
And it tolerates heat and drought.
So all it wants is full sun and well-drained soil, and it grows inUSDA zonesthree to nine.
