But the truth is that wasps have a somewhat undeserved bad reputation.

These insects do plenty of good in our lawns and gardens, and not alltypes of waspsare aggressive.

Most of the time, wasps mind their own business.

Theyre just providing food for their babies, like any good parent.

Of course, problems arise when wasps build their homes too close to ours.

What Types Of Wasps Are Aggressive?

The problematic types are the social wasps, who live together in a colony with a queen.

There are thousands ofwasp species.

Their colonies contain thousands of workers by late summer, says Raupp.

They nest in the ground, in a wall, or behind siding.

Theyre most aggressive in the fall.

Their black bodies feature yellow markings.

Theyre not aggressive but will sting if they feel threatened.

These wasps are brown with yellow stripes.

They are black or brown with brown or yellow stripes and have long bodies and legs.

They are large with round, thick bodies and black and white markings.

Mud Daubers

These are less aggressive and rarely sting, only if threatened.

You may see these slender black-and-yellow wasps near buildings where they make their nests from mud.

They can helpcontrol spiders.

Other signs of a wasp infestation include finding dead wasps in your home or hearing buzzing indoors.

It could mean you have a nest nearby.

You may see a nest or signs of damaged wood around your home.

How Do I Prevent Wasps?

But results dont last long.

Essential oils also can be slick or oily and may stain surfaces or be irritating to people and pets.

Spraying every potential cellulose-containing surface in your yard also isnt practical.

It would be a huge amount of labor for little payoff, says Crawley.

Its not something Ive ever recommended.

Can You Kill Wasps With Soap And Water?

Another DIY remedy you may have heard of is spraying wasps with soapy water.

(FYI, commercial EPA-registered sprays must knock down wasps within 10 seconds).

Do Wasp Traps Work?

These traps contain an attractant, which draws wasps in, and then they drown inside the trap.

Dont count on traps to solve wasp problems, says Crawley.

Do Wasp Decoy Nests Work?

Some wasps, such as yellowjackets, dont even build nests that resemble the decoys.

Shine a flashlight toward the side of the opening, then spray directly into the hole.

Stay away from the nest for at least a day.

Leave it alone, says Raupp.

Wasps do lots of good, so live and let live if theyre not a threat to your family.

Depending on the pesticide, the residue may affect those wasps upon return.

It won’t get rid of the wasps and it may cause the colony to swarm.

A wasp’s lifespan depends on the bang out of wasp and its role in the colony.

Drone wasps are male wasps that fertilize new queen wasps and they live only about three weeks.
