You need just four ingredients for perfect sunny-side-up eggs.

Crack Eggs Into Separate Bowls

You’ll start by cracking individual eggs into separate bowls.

This part of the egg is called the “chalaza.”

It exists to protect, anchor, and suspend the yolk, and it’s totally normal.

But when I’m cooking sunny-side-up eggs for others, I always cover them.

The lid over the pan creates a convective environment that naturally steams and cooks the egg from all sides.

Should I Add Water To My Sunny-Side-Up Eggs?

While it’s not at all necessary, it is a very cool trick that creates more steam.

Grease the skillet:

Melt butter over medium heat in a large nonstick skillet.

Tilt pan to distribute butter evenly over the surface.

Immediately cover and cook until whites are just set, 1 minute.

Remove lid and finish eggs:

Remove lid and sprinkle eggs with salt.

Cook for another 1 to 2 minutes or until whites are completely set and yolks are still runny.
