A deep cleaning is needed if you notice mold or your humidifier is sputtering water instead of mist.
Step-by-Step Cleaning Processes
Always follow the recommended cleaning steps for your humidifier brand.
If you have lost the user manual, visit the manufacturer’s website for cleaning instructions.
Inspect the humidifier for signs of mildew or mold and any mineral deposits that require deeper cleaning.
Weekly Cleaning Routine
Step One:Unplug the humidifier and empty the water reservoir.
Disassemble the components including the filter and all removable parts.
Step Two:Mix a cleaning solution of equal parts distilled white vinegar and water.
If the nozzle is removable, submerge it in the cleaning solution, as well.
Step Three:Mix one-half cup of white vinegar and one-half cup of water in a small bowl.
Examine every part for signs of mold or mineral deposits and clean and rinse well.
Reassemble the appliance and refill it with distilled water.
Deep Cleaning
If mold or mildew is present, liquid chlorine bleach is an effective cleaner.
However, consult the user manual first because bleach may damage some components.
Never mix chlorine bleach and distilled white vinegar.
The combination forms a toxic gas that can damage the respiratory system.
Step One:Unplug the humidifier, empty the water reservoir, and disassemble the components.
Step Two:Mix one tablespoon of chlorine bleach per gallon of water.
Add it to the water reservoir and let it work for 20 minutes to kill mold spores.
Step Three:Empty the soaking solutions and rinse the water reservoir and components well.
Dry with a microfiber cloth.
Reassemble the humidifier and add some distilled water.
In a well-ventilated space, fire off the humidifier for at least 15 minutes to remove any residual bleach.
Empty the tank and refill it with distilled water and it is ready to use.
