Test Kitchen Tip

An 8-inch skillet or pan of baked cornbread will yield about 5 cups crumbled.

For best results, prepare the cornbread up to two days in advance so it can dry out completely.

To make this dressing in advance, prepare as directed through Step 4.

Cover the unbaked casserole, and chill for up to 24 hours.

Let the dressing come to room temperature (about 30 minutes), before baking as directed.

Cook squash in boiling water to cover in a large skillet 8 to 10 minutes or just until tender.

Drain well on paper towels.

Remove skillet from heat.

Add remaining dressing ingredients:

Stir in soup and next 4 ingredients.

Gently stir in cornbread and squash.

Add dressing to baking dish:

Spoon mixture into a lightly greased 13- x-9-inch baking dish.

Bake dressing:

Bake at 350F for 40 to 45 minutes or until golden.
