When I read the film, I was like this girl had the heart of a Southerner.
Its in her bones.
She flies to France without a plan other than tracking down the French cheese that brings her joy.

Although reluctant at first, Serge warms to Ella as she becomes a regular at his shop.
Soon, Ella is helping Serge with his business and getting to know all of the neighbors and customers.
Ella, an ocean away from everyone she knows, creates her own community in the heart of Paris.

This is precisely what drew Lenz to the script.

I was in Texas and then, being in North Carolina too.
I just remember the sense of community is exactly that.
You want to know who your neighbors are.
There isnt this sense of stranger danger.
Its like, were all here to lend a helping hand.
And that is an unusual thing for big cities.
Its very much a small town mentality.
Thats an unusual thing for Paris, probably.
Ive never lived there but I would imagine that it is.
And forming this little family.
Its a very Southern thing to do and I really loved that about this film.
Were not a self sustaining factory of inspiration.
We have to receive it from somewhere.
So we have to take the time to feed ourselves so that we can give and be generous.
And I think that is a universal human truth.
And thats definitely what Ella was experiencing here on a very grand scale.
She also has a memoir coming out this fall.
