Read on to learn about six types in particular that Southern designers consider dated and/or difficult to work with.

Shag Carpets

Skip that shag carpet, unless you want to embrace a major throwback moment.

Debbie Mathews LeRoy immediately associates shag carpeting with the spaces of her childhood.

Too-Neutral Carpets

Say goodbye to neutral gray and opt for more colorful carpets, LeRoy encourages.

“This indicates a shift away from the neutral-toned carpets that were popular in recent years.”

“Its a great way to keep things timeless while adding a bit of coziness to your space.”

The designer says, “While it’s undeniably soft, it can be less forgiving in everyday life.

“I opt for those with visual interest through patterns or varied yarn colors.,” she says.

“The availability of mid to large-scale patterns has significantly increased, offering more choices.”

Twisty Textures

Today, simple is best when it comes to carpet texture.

“That said, it can be delicate, staining easily even with just water.”

She adds that those looking for full coverage are better off going with a custom-cut rug.

“This approach offers the warmth and comfort of carpeting while adding a more contemporary and tailored aesthetic.”
