Under ideal conditions, tubers should last for several weeks.

Its important to note that all of the above relates to whole potatoes.

If theyre cut, keep em chilled in an airtight container in the fridge.

As you might guess, there are a few outliers to this rule forstoring tomatoes.

Also, if you slice tomatoes, they must be stored in the fridge, Carothers says.

If you do end up refrigerating tomatoes, Carter recommends letting them return to room temp before eating.

They should be stored at room temperature on the counter until they are ripe, says chef James Dibella.

Certain fruits, such as pineapples and watermelon, dont ripen more after theyve been picked.

Once peeled, bananas need to be refrigerated or frozen, according to Carothers.

This doesnt affect food safety, but its not as pleasant texturally or visually.

Chocolate also easily absorbs odors from anything nearby (ahem, yesterdays refrigeratedleftoversif theyre in the same proximity).

Once the package is opened, its best to refrigerate.

Otherwise, for optimal safety, we would recommend refrigerating at all times, Carothers says.

Refrigerating unopened condiments does nothing to enhance the flavors, and takes up precious fridge space!
